Louis J. Leibold, 86, of Cascade, passed away Sunday, June 18, 2017, at 3:24 a.m. at Jones Regional Medical Center in Anamosa.
Friends and relatives of Louis may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a wake service will be held at 2:30 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Services for Louis will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke presiding. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, with full military honors afforded by Cascade American Legion Post 528.
Louis was born May 6, 1931, in Cascade, Iowa, son of John and Mayme (Kurt) Leibold. He received his education from the rural country schools and St. Mary's High School. Louis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Oct. 19, 1957, he was united in marriage to Betty McGovern at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade.
He was a farmer at heart, having worked on several farms. He made butter and worked at the Cascade Municipal Plant. He worked for the Cascade Telephone Co. for 33 years. He came out of retirement to work for the Bernard Telephone Co. part time for two years. Louis also served as financial secretary for the Knights of Columbus for many years.
He met many beautiful Catholic people who helped make him the man that he was. Louis was thankful for all the people God had given him to be a part of his life.
He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, Cascade American Legion Post 528 and Cascade Knights of Columbus Council 930.
He is survived by wife, Betty Leibold of Cascade; seven children, Lynn (Jim) Hostert of Cascade, Lois (Scott) Swantz of Mount Vernon, Leann (Dennis) Wagner of Anamosa, Karen (Ken) McDermott of Cascade, Joseph (Jill) Leibold of Waterloo, Robert (Gwen) Leibold of Madison, Wis., and Kay (Dennis) Forke of Fairfax; 17 grandchildren, Brianna and Brett Hostert, Austin, Collin and Kara Swantz, Mallory and Abby Wagner, Megan and Justin McDermott, Rachel, Emily and Benjamin Leibold, Ellen, Cooper and Addyson Leibold, Jackson and Lizzie Forke; and two siblings, James Leibold of Clearwater, Kan., and Leona (Bob) Buckley of Cascade.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Alex Wagner and Brandon Swantz, three siblings, Grace (Urban) Hageman, Vincent Leibold and Marion (Fred) Manternach; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Leibold.
In lieu of flowers, a Louis J. Leibold Memorial Fund has been established to be distributed among the charities of his choice.
