Louis Gilbert Acord was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Walter and Emma (Weidle) Acord. He married Gladys M. Ward on June 23, 1940. The couple lived in a number of places before settling in Oxford. Louie spent most of his working days as a finish carpenter for various construction companies, but retired from the University of Iowa in the maintenance department.
He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He loved working with wood; if he wasn't building something, he was whittling it! Louie loved the outdoors: hunting, fishing and especially camping with Gladys and his grandchildren, visiting all 48 contiguous states, and even wintering in Texas for a few years with their snowbird friends.
His family includes his two children and their spouses, Larry and Deanna Acord of Cedar Rapids and Linda and Jim Langenberg of West Branch; four grandchildren, Blake Acord (Chris), Mark Acord (Amy), Kurt Acord (Kathy) and Kristina Bevans; 13 great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicholas, Kaitlin, Kailey, Kayla, David, Ann, Brock, Kelsey, Devin, Monika, Zackary and Lauren; five great-great-grandchildren, Kyle, Jackson, Andslee, James and Amelia; and sister-in-law, Darlene Acord.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys; a son, Gerald in infancy; brothers, Harry, Robert, Alvin, Don and Eugene Acord; and sisters, Helen Carver and Mary Williams.
Our family would like to express our most sincere thanks to Dr. Fred Ovrom and all the staff and administration at Crestview Care Center in West Branch. Not only did you love and care for our Dad and Grandpa, but in doing so you cared for us, Thank You!
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Louie's family and his services.
