Lorraine Marie (Moenk) Denniston, 98, of Onslow, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, at the Anamosa Care Center. Her memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, at 11 a.m. where a visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, at Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming. Burial will be at the Wyoming Cemetery. Dawson Funeral Services of Wyoming is caring for her family.
Lorraine Marie was born Oct. 17, 1925, to Henry and Matilda (Prull) Moenk. She graduated from Wyoming High School in 1943. She was united in marriage to Gene Denniston on March 17, 1944, at Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming. On Aug. 18, 1946, she gave birth to their son, Chester, and Feb. 27, 1949, she gave birth to their daughter, Carol. Lorraine worked at the Midland School in Onslow as a secretary for many years. Lorraine enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s school activities and visits from the out of state grand- and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed watching Iowa and Iowa State college football and basketball. She loved playing cards with all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She became known to them all as “Grandma Sweetie Pie.” Lorraine also enjoyed fishing with Gene, Chester and grandsons, going to Carlos O’Kelly’s with Carol, playing poker with her nieces and nephews, euchre tournaments, gambling trips to Las Vegas and local casinos, crossword puzzles, sudoku and all kinds of card games. She was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her son Chester, daughter Carol (Jim) Eggert, five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Larry Denniston, sister-in-law Bonnie Bauer and many loved nieces and nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Richard and Lewis, sisters-in-law Elfreida, Vesta and Barb, brothers-in-law Preston and John.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Above and Beyond, the staff of the Anamosa Care Center for their tender care and Woodland Park for their love and amazing care. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Above and Beyond Hospice, Zion American Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice in her honor.
