Loren McAllister passed from this life and into the Lord's presence on Nov. 23, 2016, at St. Luke's Living Center West in Cedar Rapids. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial: Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City following the service.
He was born in Burlington, Iowa, on July 21, 1926, the son of Walter and Margaret (Marshall) McAllister.
Loren was a lifelong member of the VFW Disabled Veterans Association. He also belonged to the American Legion in Marion. Loren served as part of the U.S. Army's 6th Division during World War II. He held the rank of private first class and fought in several engagements. He was injured during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart.
Loren began his farming career at 23 in Gilman and continued to farm for more than 40 years. He farmed in Des Moines, Benton and Linn counties. Loren raised cattle and grain. He also had a career with the Burlington Northern Railroad for 25 years, where he worked as a clerk.
Loren was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Marion. He supported that ministry throughout his life.
Loren is survived by his wife, Nina Jean Mayer; sister, Joyce Van Wyk; three nieces; and several other loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
