Longcor, Robert Henry
Robert Henry Longcor, 78, of Cedar Rapids, most recently of Birmingham, Iowa, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. David Beckman of St. Matthew Catholic Church will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Private interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include his daughter, Anne (David) Parmley of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren, Jack and Lauren; and longtime friend and companion, Sandra Yarnell of Birmingham, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Nelson Longcor; and his parents.
Bob was born Dec. 11, 1932, in Moline, Ill., the son of Henry Longcor and Florence (Van Isegham) Longcor. He graduated from Alleman High School, attended St. Ambrose and Acme School of Tool and Die Design. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He married Sandra Nelson Longcor in 1961 and shortly thereafter moved to Cedar Rapids from Illinois.
Bob was a friend and neighbor who was well known for his drysense of humor, his sense of irony and ability to make you laugh with him until the point of tears. Most of all he was a dedicated father who spent much of his free time with Anne teaching, exploring and cheering her on.
Bob worked many years as a mechanical draftsman in various engineering companies in Illinois and Cedar Rapids. Many know him as the “shoe guy,” working part time for Famous Footwear for almost 35 years.
He loved the outdoors, animals and the company of close friends. Bob found great comfort in recent years spending time with Sandy and their friends in Birmingham, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 N. 18th Ave., Hiawatha, IA 52233.
