He was involved with ROTC in college, and served in the United States Army during World War II. After his service, he came home and went to work in the family business, Motor Equipment Co. Later, he and his brother purchased the business. He married Mary Reynolds on March 27, 1943, in Lordsburg, N.M. He and Mary shared 61 wonderful years together before Mary's death in 2004. He then became a resident at Cottage Grove Place, where he enjoyed the company of many dear friends. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Ward's honor be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
