Lola Mae (Nelsen) Maher, 85, of Mechanicsville, lost her battle with cancer on May 7, 2021, at home surrounded by her family. A wake service will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021, beginning at 8 a.m. St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mechanicsville, followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial and concluding rites will follow in the Red Oak Cemetery, rural Tipton. Lola was born March 19, 1936, in Tipton, Iowa, to Walter and Edna (Hartley) Nelsen. She married Robert Maher April 1953 in Tucson, Ariz.
Lola is loved and survived by her daughters, Kathi (Lee) Kruse of Lisbon, Connie (Doug) Weber of Mechanicsville and Lisa (Steve) Vittetoe of Lisbon; grandchildren, Michelle, April, Kristie, Chiara, Tracy, Jennifer and Sandra; 12 great-grandchildre; one great-great grandchild; one sister, Betty Coonrod, Phoenix, Ariz. (who came to live with her during her cancer battle and is truly our family Angel); one niece, two nephews and many friends.
One of Lola's passions was volunteering for the Mechanicsville community. These include the Mechanicsville Legion Auxiliary, St. Mary's Catholic Church and for the Senior Dining Bingo night. She was the organizer of funeral lunches in the community for many years. She was famous for her potato salad. She loved having family gatherings at her home, reading, gardening and working at Bubba's. She owned and operated several businesses over her lifetime.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Walter Nelsen; her husband, Robert Maher; and sister, Patricia Sterner.
All memorial donations will stay in the Mechanicsville community.
