Lola Lutz
LOLE MAE (LEWIS) LUTZ
Vinton
Lola Mae (Lewis) Lutz, 86, a lifelong resident of Vinton, passed away at her home on Oct. 9, 2018, surrounded by her loving family following a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with Pastor Phil Borleske officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Lola was born Feb. 9, 1932, in Vinton, Iowa, to Lemuel (Levi) and Lillian (Chase) Lewis and grew up on the family farm south of Vinton, which has been owned by the family since 1903. She attended country school and graduated from Vinton's Lincoln High School in 1950.
After high school, Lola worked as a bookkeeper for Vinton Farmers Supply Inc. for several years. As a young woman, Lola participated in a social group for young adults through her church, and that's where she met her future husband, Melvin Lutz. They were married Dec. 2, 1956, in the Presbyterian church in Vinton. When her first child was born, she chose to leave employment to raise her children. Her greatest pleasure was her family.
Lola enjoyed driving trips. Melvin, Lola and their daughters would visit a national park every summer. She was a skilled gardener and always had a large vegetable garden. She would can and make jams from the fruits of her labors. Lola kept feeders stocked because she enjoyed watching birds and the antics of the neighborhood squirrels. She was an active and faithful member of the Presbyterian church, and she managed the church's cradle roll for 50 years.
Lola was an avid reader and later in life she enjoyed reading books about the Amish community because the Amish way of life reminded her of the life on the family farm of her youth.
Lola is survived by her daughters, Becky Lutz of Vinton and Kathy (David) Dzewaltowski, and their two children, Chelsea and Alex Dzewaltowski of Manhattan, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Irene Lewis; her sister-in-law, Lucille Lutz; and her husband of 51 years, Melvin Lutz.
Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Church, 608 First Ave., Vinton, IA 52349; Hospice Compassus, 5005 Bowling St., Suite B, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404; or a charity of the donor's choice.
The family would like to thank Leaping Rescues, Dr. Brian Meeker and the staff of the Vinton Family Medical Clinic, Virginia Gay Hospital and Hospice Compassus for their excellent care.
Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home is caring for Lola and her family. Condolences may be left at
