Lois Walter Wallace was born March 1, 1924, near Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Gordon and Blanche (Bell) Tompkins. She attended rural country schools and Marengo High School. She was baptized and confirmed on Oct. 22, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Oxford. Lois was united in marriage to LeRoy L.H. Walter on March 5, 1942, at the Immanuel Lutheran parsonage near Williamsburg. He died on Jan. 5, 1953. On Jan. 27, 1955, she was united in marriage to Herman E. Wallace at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage in Conroy. He died on July 8, 1989. Lois had worked for Ben Franklin, Me Too and Roehrkasse Locker, retiring in 1986. She enjoyed baby-sitting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lois also enjoyed doing yard work, playing the piano and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Lois passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 93 years.
She is survived by four children: Karol (Ed) Lacher of Williamsburg, Larry Walter of North English, Dale (Pam) Walter of Williamsburg and Mark Wallace of Homestead; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Helen Hartin of Iowa City, Mary (Ray) Goldammer of Marengo, Alice Heitman and Eleanor Wyant both of Williamsburg; a sister-in-law, LaVerne Walters of Oxford; and a son-in-law, Ed Fordyce of Mount Vernon. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Edgar Tompkins; a daughter, Karen Fordyce; and a grandson, Michael Walter.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Conroy. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home is caring for Lois and her family.
