Loftus, Monica C.
Monica C. Loftus, 93, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Independence House at Northview in Lincoln, Neb., following a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, by the Rev. David Ambrose. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. and a vigil at 5:30 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m., and at the church Monday after 9 a.m.
Monica is survived by two daughters, Laura (Robert) Hansen of Sibley and Virginia (Dave) Staley of Lincoln, Neb.; daughter-in-law, Jane Loftus of St. Augustine, Fla.; grandchildren, Rachel and Katie Hansen, Tony, Molly and Theresa Staley, Jolie Crowder and Jason Loftus; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Edsill, Kathleen Schaefer, Rosemary Schaefer and Wilma Gilbert, all of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.
Monica was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, in 1984; son, Patrick; her sisters, Alice and Dorothy; and brothers, Daniel and Patrick.
Monica Catherine was born Jan. 1, 1918, the daughter of Lewis Christopher and Helen Henrietta (McGarvey) Klein. She attended St. Mary's of Mount Carmel High School in Eagle Center, Iowa and Mount Mercy College. She married Richard Michael Loftus on Aug. 1, 1939, in Cedar Rapids. Monica worked at Armstrong's for 11 years during the 1940s.
Monica was a charter member of All Saints Catholic Church and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She was involved with the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary for 32 years with 9,000 volunteer hours. She was part of the Regis/Xavier Bridge Fundraising Marathon for over 40 years. Her other interests included helping with Campfire and Girl Scouts, Welcome Wagon, and various bridge clubs.
Memorials may be directed to the Mercy Hospital Endowment Fund or Xavier High School.
The family would like to thank the staff at Gramercy Hill Assisted Living, Independence House at Northview, and Aseracare Hospice, all of Lincoln, for the care and concern shown to Monica over the last four years.
