LLOYD SAUNDERS
Wyoming
Lloyd S. Saunders, 99, of Wyoming, Iowa, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 23, 2015, at the Clarence Care Center after a short illness. A celebration of Lloyd's life will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Pence Cemetery, rural Baldwin.
Lloyd Scott Saunders was born Dec. 19, 1915, on a farm in Clinton County, south of Baldwin, Iowa, the son of Bert Raymond and Ida Pearl (Scott) Saunders. When Lloyd was 5, the family moved to a farm near Canton in Jackson County. Lloyd attended country school, graduating in 1930, and grew to manhood helping on the family farm. On Jan. 1, 1939, Lloyd married Roberta M. Dixon of Belle Plaine at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home on the family farm near Canton until 1974, when they moved to a small farm near Wyoming. Roberta and Lloyd enjoyed a wonderful marriage for over 67 years. Her death on June 15, 2006, left a big gap in his life. However, he carried on and remained in his own home until he was well over 97.
Lloyd's life work was farming. He loved the land, the growing of crops and livestock and the rural lifestyle. Lloyd was a longtime member of the Tipton Bible Church, the Anamosa Gideon Camp, the Jackson County Historical Society, State of Iowa Historical Society, Farm Bureau, and several other farm-related groups. He also served for many years on the Canton school board.
Those left to honor Lloyd's memory include a sister, Marjorie Clemens of Cedar Rapids; a number of nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; a nephew, Larry Harder; and three sisters, Myrtle Watters, Beulah Duhme, and Wilma "Peg" Harder on Jan. 22, 2015.
Lloyd was a kind, dignified man, who lived his faith.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Lloyd S. Saunders memorial fund has been established.
