Lloyd Clair "Grumpy" Williams, 94, of Chillicothe, Mo., passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at Life Care Center of Carrollton, under the care of his family and Compassus Hospice.
Lloyd was born Nov. 9, 1922, in the rural Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area, the son of Walter C. Williams and Gaylene Leidigh Williams. He was a graduate of Toddville High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from January 1945 until August 1946. He was a transportation corporal and served in Japan and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. On March 5, 1959, Lloyd married Wilma Faye McBurney in Toddville. She preceded him in death on April 21, 1994.
Lloyd was a life-long farmer in Iowa and the Avalon and Chillicothe, Mo., areas.
He attended the Chillicothe Free Methodist Church and was a past commander of the Toddville American Legion and a member of American Legion Post No. 25 of Chillicothe. He was Sunday school superintendent of Greens Grove Community Church in rural Center Point, Iowa.
Lloyd enjoyed woodworking and building furniture, but his greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family.
Lloyd is survived by his stepdaughter, Patricia Campbell of Chillicothe; three grandsons, Vince Campbell (Rachelle), Derek Campbell (Teresa) and Monty Campbell (Kerrie), all of Chillicothe; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Virginia McBurney of Searcy, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Wilma.
Memorials in honor of Lloyd "Grumpy" Williams may be made to the Liberty 4-H Club of Chillicothe or to the Chillicothe Free Methodist Church and left at or mailed to Heritage Funeral Home, 3141 N. Washington, Chillicothe, MO 64601. Online condolences may be left at www.heritage-becausewecare.com.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, in the sanctuary of the Chillicothe Free Methodist Church, 1441 Jackson St., Chillicothe. A visitation will be held one hour before the service in the church basement. Burial will be at Dunkard Cemetery, Toddville, at a later date.
