Lionel McElroy, 56, of Marion, formerly of Chicago, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018, at 3:20 p.m. at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Gospel Tabernacle Church, Cedar Rapids.
Lionel was born July 10, 1961, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Lonnie Braxton and Dorothy McElroy. He was a very hardworking man. Lionel was very active at the Gospel Tabernacle Church, and was the drummer for many years. He had a passion for drums and was a drummer in a band. Lionel was known for being a great motivator, and very kind-hearted, helpful and encouraging to others. He loved to talk with people. Lionel was a good father and a well-loved man. He was a God-fearing man.
He is survived by his wife, Chiquita McElroy; son, Tahoun; sisters, Janice (Stanford) Trayweeks and Tammy (Greg) Golden; children, Lionel McElroy, Shon Starks, Rashad Starks, Lonnie Walker, Donnie Walker and Ariel Golden; five grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Lionel was preceded in death by his parents, and twin brother at 6 months old.
