Lindebak, Edward Jesse
Edward Jesse Lindebak died Feb. 3, 2012, at age 93. Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville. The Rev. Dennis Hopes will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, with full military honors provided by the Coralville American Legion (and assisted by other local military organizations).
Edward was born in LuVerne, Iowa, on July 5, 1918, the son of Jesse A. Lindebak and Laura (Sanford) Lindebak. Edward graduated from high school in LuVerne and from Waldorf College in Forest City before joining the Army in 1942. He served in Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to Iowa. He married Margaret Egli in 1945.
They settled in LuVerne, where Ed worked at his father's implement dealership, and served as postmaster before he took a job in 1953 at Farmers State Bank in LuVerne. When the bank was acquired by Security State Bank in Algona, Ed managed the LuVerne branch, and eventually became a vice president. He also ran an insurance agency and a tax preparation service during his 30 years at the bank.
Ed served the LuVerne community as an active member of the American Legion and the Community Club. He was a vital member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed bowling and golfing.
After Ed's retirement from the bank in 1983, Ed and Margaret moved to Coralville, where they enjoyed being closer to grandchildren and attending Hawkeye athletics. He participated in the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) in Iowa City for several years.
Ed was proud of his success at raising his family, which he felt was the most important goal of his life. Ed was a hands-on father and grandfather and a tolerant, patient man. His ready smile and quick wit put everyone around him at ease. He was a role model of a gentleman for his family and all who knew him.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Dawn Helscher (Charles) of Keota; son, Layne (Christina Wehde) of Des Moines; grandchildren, Angela Brainard (Nick) of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Leslie (Jacob) Olson of Menomonee Falls, Wis., and Aaron Lindebak of Iowa City; and great-grandchildren, Kayla and Natalie Olson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret in 2007; his infant brother, Leonard; and his sisters, Ferne Neal and Dorothy Hanselman.
Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
