Light, Franklin P.
Franklin P. Light, 91, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be Sunday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a rosary service starting at 3 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Monday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m., with a visitation beginning an hour before, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky officiating. A private family burial will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, with military honors.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lorraine Light of Marion; three children, Gary (Fanny) Light of Scottsdale, Ariz., Linda (Tom) Bever of Marion and Marianne (Tim) Fitzpatrick of Urbandale; four grandchildren, Kari (Jeff) Brisel of Marion, Shane and Bret Light of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Connor Fitzpatrick of Urbandale; three great-grandchildren, Chase, Logan and Colin Brisel, all of Marion; a sister, Patricia Soukup of Longmont, Colo.; sister-in-law, Iola Light of Fort Collins, Colo.; brother-in-law, Joe Soukup of Longmont, Colo.; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Franklin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dennis Light; and a sister, Opal Fisher.
Franklin P. Light was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Watkins, Iowa, the son of Perry and Rose Leise Light. He graduated from Norway High School, with the class of 1939. Franklin was united in marriage to Lorraine Clear on Oct. 20, 1945, in Davenport, Iowa. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. Franklin received the Purple Heart while wounded in action in The Battle of the Bulge. Franklin served three years in the Army as a staff sergeant with the second armored division “Hell on Wheels” in Africa and Europe. He attended the University of Iowa.
Franklin worked for Hometown Dairy until he retired after 36 years of service. He was the supervisor in charge of sales. Franklin enjoyed his family, anything sports-related and dancing.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
