Li, Yueling 'Lotus'
Yueling “Lotus” Li, 76, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2010, surrounded by her family. Funeral services, sponsored by Chinese Church, Chinese Community Association and Chinese School of Iowa City, will be held at 9 a.m. today at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville.
Yueling Li was born Aug. 2, 1934, in Tianjin, China. She graduated from Nankai University in 1957. As a professor in biology science, she worked in the Tianjin Medical University from 1957-1988. In August 1988, she moved to Iowa City, invited by The University of Iowa Department of Biology as a visiting scholar. The next year, joined by her husband, Zongxian “Peter” Chen, they started their wonderful American life. They founded the Iowa City Chinese School in 1993. She was baptized in the Chinese Church in 1990. Since then, she became a faithful Christian. She was a long time teacher in the Chinese school and taught traditional Chinese medicine.
One of her students, Linda Mulholland, said, “I love my Chinese teacher Lotus Li. It is difficult to put into words how she has touched my life. It would be wonderful if all teachers had the integrity that Lotus did. I have learned so much about Chinese medicine. Look at life differently because what I have learned. She has helped me to help others. I will continue to do so. Chinese medicine saved my life and Lotus played a very big role in my recovery.”
Yueling Li was a teacher all her life both in China and in the USA. All her students loved her, and respected her.
She survived so many calamities in her early life in China, finally settling down in the U.S.A. She enjoyed her 22 years of living in Iowa City. She loved the beautiful, nice small town. She has achieved her American dream. She would express: “Thank God, Thank America.”
Yueling Li is survived by her husband, Zongxian “Peter” Chen; four daughters, Xiaofang, Wei, Xiaohe and Shen; sons-in-law, Tao Sheng, Liwu Cui, Jing Shu and Zhong Cao; and grandchildren, Jinzhao Sheng, Liang Cui, Ningning, Andy Su and Jiuzou Cao.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Iowa City Hospice, as well as friends for their kindness and concern.
