Leverenz, Jack H.
Jack H. Leverenz, 81, passed away Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at this home in Ankeny, from complications of cancer. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ankeny Presbyterian Church, 317 SE Trilein Dr. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church. The Ankeny Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Surviving him are his wife of 59 years, Grace Naber Leverenz; one daughter, Tad at home; and three sons, Ted (Paula) Leverenz also of Ankeny, Jeff (Cristina) Leverenz of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Jon (Michele) Leverenz of Lakeville, Minn. Seven grandchildren survive, Jack W. (Laura) Leverenz, Kevin and Kimberly Leverenz, Phoenix Jon Michael Leverenz, Donovan Heine and Tate and Skyler Leverenz. Also surviving is a sister, Dot Yenchesky from Wausau, Wis., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ed and Min Leverenz; and one sister, Lenore “Nore” Otte.
Jack was born in Sheboygan, Wis., to Edwin and Wilhelmina (Minnie Philipowsky) Leverenz on May 28, 1928. Jack was educated in Sheboygan grade schools until moving to Elkhart Lake, Wis., where he graduated from high school in 1946. As a teenager, Jack learned the golfing business on his father's Quit Qui Oc golf course in Elkhart Lake and became a junior golf professional. He also raised rabbits, pigs, pigeons and horses for hobbies. Jack taught horseback riding and had a hayride business.
Jack retired in 1995, but kept busy. He had part-time jobs at Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Quest Diagnostics and volunteered for SCORE, a group of retired executives. His hobbies included flying, boxing, his annual corn roast, motorcycles, handball, boating, playing the French horn and tuba, motor home traveling to his sons' football games, cocktail parties, golf and most of all-Mr. Fix-It!
Jack belonged to Ankeny Presbyterian Church, where he played in the band and sang in the choir for many years, Ankeny Community Chorus (a charter member), the Ankeny Elks and the Ankeny American Legion.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Iowa, Ankeny Presbyterian Church or Ankeny Community Chorus.
