Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Sheryl (Robert) Dohmen of Mechanicsville, Deanna (Steve) Ketelaar of Minneapolis, Minn., and David (Sara) Wendt of Mechanicsville; six grandchildren, of whom he was very proud, Joshua (Ashley) Dohmen of Carrollton, Ga., Eric Dohmen of Mechanicsville, Nicole Ketelaar of Orlando, Fla., and Caden, Kiah and Henry Wendt of Mechanicsville; and several cousins, nieces and friends.
Leroy was born Jan. 1, 1935, east of Olin, at his grandparents' home in Jones County, to Herman John and Dorothy Pearl (Burgess) Wendt. He started school in Martelle and moved to a farm north of Mechanicsville in the fourth grade. He had resided in Mechanicsville ever since. Leroy graduated from Mechanicsville Consolidated School in May 1952. He enlisted in the Army in May 1957 and was an active member for six months, during which time he was promoted to sergeant. After active duty, he continued as a reserve for five years. On Dec. 9, 1957, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Miller at the Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville. Leroy was later baptized and joined the church. He farmed north of Mechanicsville with his father until eventually taking over the farm, then farmed with his son, David, who continues the farming tradition.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and in-laws, CJ and Cecil Miller.
Memorials may be directed to Mechanicsville Ambulance or the Mechanicsville Presbyterian Church.
