LeRoy “Rip” George Van Winkle, 94, of Cedar Rapids, IA, passed away Monday, May 20, 2024, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, IA. A private family Celebration of Life will be held. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids assisted the family.
LeRoy was born February 19, 1930, in Jefferson County, IA, the son of Orval and Elsie May (Alter) Van Winkle. He married Del Reice Elaine Swope on March 15, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa, IA. Throughout his life, LeRoy resided in various places, including Brighton, Fairfield, Solon, Lake of the Ozarks, Cedar Rapids, Ellenton, Florida, and Marion.
LeRoy graduated from Brighton High School in 1948. He served in the National Guard. LeRoy was a farmer in Jefferson County and owner of Finishing Touch with his spouse, Del Reice. He was a prayer warrior for his family. LeRoy was known for his honesty and humor.
Those left to honor his memory are his daughter, Michele Williams of Ellenton, FL; four sons, Randy (Lois) of Solon, IA, Jim (Brenda) of Colorado Springs, CO, John (Diane) of Fairfield, IA, and Craig (Cherry) of Cedar Rapids; son-in-law, Tom Londquist of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Elsie Van Winkle; spouse, Del Reice; daughter, Vicki Londquist; grandson, Sam Van Winkle; and sister, Gladys Hollander and Betty Herman.
