Leonard "Butch" J. Yanecek Jr., 72, of Lake Villa, Ill., formerly of Zion, Ill., passed away Thursday Sept. 3, 2015, at Advocate Condell Medical Center, Libertyville, Ill.
He was born Sept. 23, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of the late Leonard and Alice (Kolda) Yanecek. Len grew up in Fairfax and worked for Collins Radio until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966. Leonard proudly served in the Army until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member of VFW Post 7448, Winthrop Harbor, Ill., and Zion-Benton American Legion Post 865. Leonard enjoyed boating, fishing with his grandchildren, bike riding, watching NASCAR and watching old Western movies.
On April 11, 1964, he married Mary Dircks in Cedar Rapids. She preceded him in death on Oct. 28, 1999.
Survivors include a son, James (Christina) Yanecek of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jenelle, Alex, Jack and Carly; three siblings, Mary Ann (Ronald) Anderson, Betty Skvor and Bonnie Merrifield, all of Cedar Rapids; five in-laws, including Karlene (Ron) Krueger of Wauwatosa, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Strange Funeral Home of Antioch, 1055 Main St. (Route 83), Antioch, IL 60002, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Memorial Park, Zion, Ill.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lake Villa Rescue Squad are appreciated in Leonard's memory.
