Leonard John Petska, 92,
of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at The Meth-Wick Community. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, where a visitation will begin at 9 a.m. The Rev. Ivan Nienhaus will officiate. Private inurnment: St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his son, James (Bev) Petska; his daughter, Juliana (Tom) Day; grandchildren, Brian (Julie) Day, Stephanie (Craig) Tucker and Jennifer Denice Day; and great-grandchildren, Bridget Denice, Mason Day and Nolan and Zachary Tucker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolores Petska; his daughter, Denice Marie Petska; and his brother, Richard Petska.
Leonard was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Helen (Kadlec) Petska. He married Dolores Marie Stadler on April 28, 1951, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Leonard and Dolores were married for 63 years until her death in 2014. Together they raised three children and shared many wonderful years traveling and camping. They spent countless hours with their grandchildren, who are forever grateful for the time that was devoted to them.
Leonard graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon honor fraternities and worked at Rockwell Collins. He was a member of the Holiday Ramblers Club, 464th Bomb Group, American Legion and the Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. He also was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Leonard was in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He saw duty as a flight engineer and gunner on a B-24.
