LEONARD LNENICKA
Center Point
Leonard Lnenicka, 90, of Center Point, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Murdoch Funeral Home, Center Point. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Center Point Cemetery.
He is survived by a son, Greg (Linda) of Albany, N.Y.; a brother, Rudolph of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Angeline Brown of Cedar Rapids.
Leonard is also survived by five grandchildren, Adam of Center Point, Andrea (Bram) Byrode of Urbana, Amanda (Matt) Goltz of Monona, Emily of Singapore and Katie of Albany, N.Y.; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gary and Grant; his beloved wife, Bonnie; a sister Wilma; and brothers, Edwin and Robert.
Leonard was born on Feb. 24, 1924, near Cedar Rapids, the son of Edward and Agnes (Svoboda) Lnenicka. He was a proud World War II veteran and served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater (Okinawa). Leonard returned from the war and married his wife of 57 years, Bonnie J. Boxa. They moved to a farm near Center Point in 1948 where they lived their entire lives. He enjoyed the independence of farm life and received great satisfaction from growing crops and raising farm animals. He and Bonnie liked traveling to all parts of the U.S. He valued education and sent his three sons to university as well as serving on the Urbana school board.
After his retirement, he remained on the farm where he enjoyed gardening and keeping animals, although fishing was probably his favorite hobby. Most of all, he loved spending time with family and friends. He was known for his smile, his kindness, his warmth and the twinkle in his eye. Leonard loved telling humorous, often self-deprecating, stories and he was a favorite among his grandchildren. His presence was uplifting and one always felt better after spending time with him. Leonard will be greatly missed but his smile and warmth will be long remembered.
