Leona Mae Pelechek, 89, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha on Jan. 19, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Very Rev. Rudolph T. Juarez officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Following the Mass, there will be a luncheon in the social hall. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha.
Leona was born in Cedar County, Neb., on May 21, 1927, to Herman and Julia Hirschman Sorensen, one of eight children. She graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1944. She worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone until her marriage to Richard in 1946. She was a library secretary for the Iowa City Community School District and the University of Iowa. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church and American Legion Auxiliary Post 17.
Leona was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Hawkeyes. She was a charter member of the Iowa City Jay-C-Ettes and a member of the Iowa City Bowling Association for 40 years.
Leona was preceded in death by her spouse, Richard; three brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by her sister, Lois Seemuth (Bob); sons, Jim (Madonna) and John (Laura); daughter, Nancy Leos (Robert); and grandchildren, Kurt Pelechek (Lauren), Susan Pelechek, Saige and Tessa Turner and Jenna Pelechek; and one great-grandchild, Clifford Pelechek.
