Leon Vernon Andrews, 91, of Germantown, Tenn., passed away on Sept. 18, 2023. He was born in Paris, Iowa, to Alvin Andrews and Vera Renfer Andrews.
He was predeceased by his parents; son, Edwin and wife Onalee; and sisters, Ann Frame and Marlys Knott.
He is survived by wife, Nancy; son, Glenn (Yong Fang); sister, Marge Mahoney; brother, Ronald Andrews; and many special nephews, nieces and cousins.
Leon was fascinated by aviation and mechanics from an early age, working in a garage during high school and after graduation, in a machine shop. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard and was activated during the Korean War. After his military service, he earned a pilot license and become a civilian contract flight instructor with the Army at San Marcos, Texas. When airline flying offered a new opportunity, Leon hired on with Southern Airways. Due to subsequent mergers, he continued to fly with Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines, retiring in 1992. He earned his FAA mechanic license in 2013 and his FAA Inspection Authorization in 2015. He was eager to learn from others and generous in sharing his knowledge and abilities. He considered the aviation community as family.
At Leon’s request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please remember him often with appreciation and affection.
