Leon Shaffer, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Hallmark Care Center, Mount Vernon, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the United Methodist Church, Anamosa, where
friends may call after 1 p.m. The Rev Laurie Riley will officiate at the services. Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, is in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; his son, Mike (Nancy) Shaffer, Anamosa; four grandchildren, Zane (Annie) Shaffer, Jacob (Jessica) Shaffer, Jennifer (Tim) David and Cody (Claire) Shaffer; six great-grandchildren, Brandon, Brenton, Raven, Pacey, Jacob and Johanna; Dorothy's children, Bill (Carol) Schley and family and Beverly (Larry) Stewart and family; and his siblings, Donna (Lee) Schoon, George (Pat) Armstrong and Carol (Paul) Clark.
Leon Elmo Shaffer was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Viola, Iowa, the son of Lavern and Eva DeLancey Shaffer. Leon grew up in Viola and was raised by his mother, Eva, and stepfather, Roy Armstrong.
Following his graduation from Viola High School, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. Leon married Lois Postel in 1946. He was employed at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for 30 years.
Leon and Dorothy McVay Schley were married Dec. 31, 1975, at the United Methodist Church in Anamosa. The couple farmed on Dorothy's farm near Martelle until 1982, when they retired from active farming. They would spend their winters in Zapata, Texas, and summers in Martelle. Leon moved to the Hallmark Care Center in 2012.
