Leo is survived by his wife, Alice; Margaret (Doug) Kimball and Patricia McCarthy, both of Cedar Rapids, and Janet McCarthy (John Evans) of Minneapolis, Minn., Allen (Sarah) Dvorak of Maxwell and Randy (Sheri) Dvorak of Bettendorf; sister-in-law, Gloria McCarthy of Cedar Rapids; and brothers-in-law, Don (Glenda) Eggerling; Art (Delores) Eggerling and Arlen (Janet) Eggerling. He is also survived by Michael Kimball, Jennifer Pflughaupt, Mark Kimball, Julia Lindsey, Aimee Heck, Adam Trachta, Ian Evans, Katherine Dvorak, Sarah Balvanz, Jacob Dvorak, Caleb Dvorak, Josef Dvorak, Erika Dvorak and Kaitlyn Dvorak
Leo was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Emmet McCarthy; a niece, Teresa McCarthy Ward; and granddaughter, Rebekah Dvorak.
Leo was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Coggon, the son of Eugene and Berniece (Coleman) McCarthy. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1948. Leo was a veteran of the Army and worked at Wilson-Farmstead Foods from 1948 to 1990. He married Alice Eggerling Dvorak on April 21, 1990, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Leo enjoyed life. He volunteered for over 20 years at Heritage Specialty Care by taking people to appointments and providing other support. He was a world traveler, going on trips with his brother, Emmet and family, then later years with his wife, Alice. He was full of Irish wit and blarney. He was a kid at heart and always fun loving. Always up for a friendly debate, Leo would defend either side of an argument and sometimes both.
Leo was an integral and cherished member of our family. He led us all by example, even with the McCarthy face. He was loved and respected by all and will be forever missed.
Instead of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Patrick's Church Roof Fund.
