Lenway, Alvin
Alvin Lenway, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Northbrook Manor Care Center. Services, with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. At 6:30 p.m., there will be a 40 & 8 military presentation followed by a vigil service. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery Circle Garden.
Survivors include his wife, Dot; a brother, Fred; a sister, Mary Jane McDaniel; three sons, Fred and wife Roxanne of Nipomo, Calif., and Wilmer and Daniel of Ankeny; a daughter, Carole Johnson of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Boyd; and sister, Phyllis.
Al was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Fairibault, Minn., the son of Ezra and Alyce Ellefson Lenway. He married Dot Haworth on Sept. 14, 1938. Al worked for FMC Corp. (Link-Belt Speeder) for 33 years. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in the European Theater during World War II and was an active member of American Legion Post 727. He also served as second district commander. Al belonged to 40 & 8, VFW Post 788 and the Elks Club. He was a longtime Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Vikings fan.
Al helped establish the yearly Freedom Festival in Cedar Rapids, and the Memorial Brick project for the All Veterans Memorial. He also served on the Metro Veterans Council.
Military honors by American Legion Post No 727.
