Lawrence A. "Larry" Manternach, 80, of rural Cascade, died Thursday, May 7, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Friends and relatives of Larry may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 10, at St. Peter's
Catholic Church in Temple Hill, where a wake service will be at 2 p.m. and Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Monday, May 11, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Neil Manternach presiding. Concelebrating will be other clergy from the archdiocese. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Temple Hill, with full military honors afforded by Cascade American Legion Post 528.
Larry was born June 13, 1934, in rural Monticello, Iowa, son of Joseph and Amelia (Kelchen) Manternach. He received his education at the former St. Mary's School, Cascade, and the rural country schools. On Nov. 16, 1957, he was united in marriage to Lois Gravel at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fillmore, Iowa. The couple farmed in rural Temple Hill.
Larry was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of St. Peter's Parish, Cascade American Legion Post 528, Cascade Knights of Columbus Council 930 and Fourth Degree Dubourg Assembly Council 1573. Larry served on the Jones County Soil and Water Conservation District Committee for 20 years. He also was a member of the Aquin school board, Swiss Valley Ag board, Cascade Mutual Insurance board and Rural Fire board.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Manternach of Cascade; his seven children, the Rev. Neil Manternach of Mason City, Sister LaDonna Manternach, BVM, of Dubuque, Loren (Lori) Manternach of Cascade, Dean (Linda) Manternach and Michelle "Shelley" Manternach, both of Dubuque, Matthew (Jennifer) Manternach of Cascade and Maria (Jamie) Wood of Rosemount, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Megan (Kyle) Webber, Drew and Aaron Manternach, Thea, Sophia, Grace and Micah Manternach, Jonah, Madeline and Nathaniel Manternach, Emma and Noah Wood; one great-grandchild that will be born soon; 10 siblings, Veronica Welter of Cascade, Katie Rockzien of Anamosa, Joe (JoAnn) Manternach and Ralph (Rita) Manternach, both of Cascade, Loras (Donna) Manternach of Masonville, Joan (Tom) Hoffman, Ron (Bridget) Manternach, Muriel (Duane) Schlemme, Lois (Alan) Gravel and Lester (Mary Ellen) Manternach, all of Cascade; one brother-in-law, Clarence Quint; and one stepsister, Jeanette Callahan, and stepbrother, Dorance (Pat) Manders, both of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mildred (Manders) Manternach; one son, Wayne Manternach, in 1977; five sisters, Sister Irmina (Leona) Manternach OSF, Eva Mae Klocke, Eleanor Quint, Florence Schockemoehl and Alvina Greif; five brothers-in-law, Harold Schockemoehl, Robert Greif, Herman Welter, Elmer Klocke and Harry Rockzien; a stepbrother, Donald Manders; a stepsister-in-law, Mary Manders; and a stepbrother-in-law, Jack Callahan.
