LaVonne Chapman, 94, of Clarence, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Clarence Nursing Home. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Clarence, by the Rev. David Mears. Burial: St. John's Church Cemetery. Visitation: 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements with Chapman Funeral Home, Clarence.
Born Jan. 13, 1920, in Cedar County, the daughter of Emil and Arkie (Miller) Olson, she married Paul L. Chapman on March 22, 1941. He died Feb. 25, 2011.
LaVonne was a 1938 graduate of Stanwood High School. She attended Tipton Junior College and taught rural school near Atalissa for a year.
In 1947, Paul and LaVonne established Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, and in Wheatland in 1955.
She was a past Worthy Matron of Order of Eastern Star and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary of Clarence. Playing golf and a good game of bridge were her favorite pastimes.
Survivors include a son, Paul Jr. and wife Karla of Clarence; grandchildren, Jodi (Ken) Henke of Norwalk, Dan (Gretchen) of Clarence and Lori (Todd) Miller of Tipton; and seven great-grandchildren, Michaela and Nathan Henke; Ben, Kiley and Blake Chapman; and Grace and Ty Nichols.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Cyril Olson.
