Laverna Anna Von Ahsen was born March 10, 1929, in Iowa Township, near Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Leroy E. and Linda (Huedepohl) Lorenz. She was baptized on April 7, 1929, and confirmed on May 24, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School. Laverna was united in marriage to Henry O. Von Ahsen on July 25, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. She was a lifelong homemaker and worked various jobs outside the family farm. Laverna was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies' Aid. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing cards and, most of all, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Laverna passed away on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the age of 88 years.
She is survived by six children, Gene (Diane) Von Ahsen of Homestead, Randy (Carole) Von Ahsen of Williamsburg, Ken (Susan) Von Ahsen of St. Charles, Mo., Shirlene (Richard) Dane of Waverly, and Michael (Kristi) Von Ahsen and Kevin (Debbie) Von Ahsen, all of Williamsburg; 17 grandchildren, Darcy (Brad) Schaefer, Derek (Jessica) Von Ahsen, Bethany Von Ahsen, Trent (Hayley) Von Ahsen, Tiffany (Brandon) Wenner, Bryce (Morgan) Von Ahsen, Becky (Scott) Dalton, Hope (Luke) Scheele, Kurt Von Ahsen, Jennifer Dane, Paul (Jessica) Dane, Kenneth (Laura) Dane, Philip (Brett) Dane, Lance and Ethan Von Ahsen, Jackie (Clay) Wilken and Jessie (fiancé Vanessa) Von Ahsen; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Wille and Delaine (Donald) Wille, all of Williamsburg; and a sister-in-law, Esther Von Ahsen of Keystone.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry, in 2010; and a brother-in-law, Albert Wille.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg.
