LaVerle Maxine Dake, 85, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 14, 2015, at her home in Cedar Rapids. She was diagnosed in November 2014 with glioblastoma. Upon her diagnosis, her wish was to remain in her home, which she was able to do with the help and support of her four children, loving family and friends, and Hospice of Mercy.
A memorial service will
be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Darran Whiting. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
Survivors include four children, Theron (Josie) Manson of Cedar Rapids, Maureen (David) Kilfoile of Coral Springs, Fla., Pamela Boston (Greg McGivern) of Robins and LuAnn (Gene) Pierce of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Shawn (Stephanie) Manson of Folsom, Calif., Brooke (Quinten) Bennett of Olathe, Kan., Nicholas (Sheena) Adams of Frisco, Texas, and Erin Kilfoile (Wes Soell) of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Cade and Roman Manson, Quinten and Breylen Bennett, Lathan and Reese McGivern, Chase and Landon Adams and Baby Soell due Aug. 31, 2015.
LaVerle Maxine Knapp was born in Auburn, Iowa, on Jan. 20, 1930, the daughter of Millard and Mathilda Knapp, the first of five children. Her surviving siblings are Kay West of Vinton, Merrill Knapp of Hawkeye, Pat Maxson of Shallowater, Texas, and Larry Knapp of Dubuque.
She was united in marriage to Maurice Manson on April 23, 1946. They farmed in the Arlington, Iowa, area until his death in a farm accident in 1956. After her marriage to Darrell Dake on Oct. 27, 1961, their lives revolved around racing until his death in 2007.
LaVerle will be remembered by many as an instructor at Paris Academy Beauty School from 1958 to 1977. She was then a secretary for the Iowa Department of Human Services from 1978 until her retirement in 1995.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching college basketball and football. She loved her home and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
The family extends a sincere thank-you to the Hospice of Mercy team for its care and compassion during LaVerle's illness.
