Laurence (Larry) Anthony Schulte, 87, passed peacefully at his home in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax, with military honors by Pekomy Post #572. A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, where friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Larry is survived by his sisters, Jean (Bill) Gibney and Bernice (Richard) Zenisek of Fairfax; his nieces, Ann (Mark) Anderson and Janet Murray; and his nephews, Paul (Anne) Zenisek, Greg (Joyce) Gibney, Bart (Toni) Gibney and Jeff (Mary) Gibney, Jim Foth and Lynn Foth.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen; and two sisters, Mary and Elaine.
Larry was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Fairfax, the son of Adam and Edith (Becker) Schulte. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He was also a proud Korean conflict veteran and steward of his land, as he enjoyed farming his entire life. He married Eileen Morgan on June 28, 1978 and they danced and traveled for 25 years together. She died in 1999.
Larry served as a special deputy sheriff with the Linn County Sheriff's office, worked at Standard Oil Company in the fertilizer division and evenings at the Danceland Ballroom. Recently, he volunteered his time at the Ellis golf course and donated blood regularly. Larry was a member of the Pekomy American Legion Post #572 and VFW Post #788.
Larry treasured his family and enjoyed the friendship of many, particularly his lifelong friends, Regis and Barb Arp and family of Fairfax. His genuine kindness and generosity will be truly missed by those whose lives he touched.
Memorial donations will be gifted to the Pekomy American Legion Post #572 and Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.
