Laudie, Mildred 'Millie' Pearl
Mildred “Millie” Pearl Laudie, 92, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Oaknoll Health Center in Iowa City. Millie requested no memorial service and that her ashes join a garden.
Millie was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Yuba City, Calif., to Agnes and Ralph Ensley. She graduated from Grant High School in Sacramento, Calif., and attended two years at Graceland College (now University) in Lamoni, Iowa, then graduated with a master's degree from San Jose State University, California, with a degree in science, home economics, and art.
Millie began her teaching career in Sacramento at Grant High and later taught five years at San Jose High and seven years at Crondolete in Concord, Calif.
Millie met Bob at Graceland College then dated and married him after World War II ended. Bob and Millie loved to entertain people in their home. Many people have lived at their home over the years, including a foreign exchange student from Ecuador, students from Japan, and friends from Hawaii. They loved to travel and maintained friendships around the world.
In Walnut Creek, Millie was a Girl Scout leader, Community of Christ Sunday school teacher, and active AAUW member. In Cloverdale she was a library board member and an active member of the Cloverdale Historical Society, Historical Quilters, and Cloverdale Gardening Club.
Millie was continually learning and enjoyed spending her time and creativity with family and friends. She was intelligent, creative, articulate, aware and involved, an outstanding example of a public-spirited citizen willing to assume the responsibilities of leadership. She was especially proud to be responsible for the $1.6 million highway bypass beautification project in Cloverdale.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Laudie; their daughter, Judy (Bruce) Pfohl; and grandson, Michael (Melissa) Pfohl.
Millie was preceded in death by a young daughter, Sharon Ann; and two sisters, Olive (Harman) and Elva (Graham).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Oaknoll Foundation, 1 Oaknoll Ct., Iowa City, or Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa, or a charity of your choice.
