Larry John "Smitty" Smith, 61, husband of Georgianna "Daniese," died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Celebration of Life services will be 1 p.m. June 7 at the home of Randy and Teri Kay Foltz, 2418 New Milford School Rd., Rockford, Ill., and 2 p.m. July 5 at the home of Jim and Wendy Frentress, 6152 24th Ave., Vinton, Iowa. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is handling arrangements.
Larry was born July 1, 1952, in Lemmon, S.D., the son of John A. and Frances Jessie (Hardesty) Smith. He graduated from high school in Rockford, Ill. He met his future wife, Georgianna "Daniese" Duitsman on Jan. 29, 1995, in Rockford and they were united in marriage on Jan. 1, 2000, in Winnebago, Ill.
Larry was a certified OD/ID grinder and tool and die maker, as well as security guard for Securitas and Per-Mar Security companies. He enjoyed helping others, working on cars, motors, building houses, cart racing, fishing and spending time with his family. He was never one to shy away from a challenge. "Try it once" was a popular statement Larry John would say.
Larry is survived by his wife, Georgianna "Daniese," and stepchild, Christopher Duitsman, both of Cedar Rapids; his siblings, Delmar (Elaine) Smith of Wakefield, Mich., Mardel Brenbarger of Kingman, Ariz., Charlotte (Larry) DeGarmo of Rockford, Ill., and Lowell Smith (Alan Stevens) of Roscoe, Ill.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Darwin Brenbarger.
