Larry G. Sgontz, 78, former professor of economics at the University of Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015, at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.

Larry G. Sgontz was born March 11, 1936, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of Rudolph and Mae (Ross) Sgontz. Following graduation from high school, Larry attended the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, graduating in 1958. He later received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois at Champaign in 1963. He moved to Iowa City, where he was professor of economics at the University of Iowa, and at different times, served as director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research and director of the Graduate Program. During his career at the University of Iowa he took a leave of absence to consult the Joint Council of Economic Education in New York City and also to teach and do research in Cairo, Egypt.
His family includes his two children, Julia Phanthavong (Sal) and Paul Sgontz; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rudolph Sgontz (Peggy) and Don Sgontz (Eileen); and one sister, Dorothy Davis (Bill).
