LARRY GENE SEDREL
Cedar Rapids
Larry Gene Sedrel, loving husband, affectionate father and adoring grandfather, passed away peacefully of heart failure while surrounded by his family on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at the age of 84.
Larry was born on May 16, 1936, to Verlin and Margaret Sedrel in Pella, Iowa. In his early years, he began school in Atkins, Iowa, then attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before moving back to his birthplace and attending Central College. He spent the majority of his life with his family in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
On Dec. 20, 1955, in Galesburg, Ill., Larry married his soulmate, Sandra Sirowy, who has a way of telling stories multiple times, while never allowing them to get old. Larry and Sandy celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2020, an amazing milestone on the path of life. So many wonderful memories were shared between the two.
For years, Larry was a firefighter at the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. He drove the fire truck because he always wanted to be the first one to a fire. Aside from fighting fires, Larry was a man of business. He picked up a successful career in real estate before retiring and helping his sons run their family owned car washes.
Larry's parents, stepmother, Isabelle, and brother, Donald, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sandy; daughter, Terri Erickson (Wayne); daughter, Sheryl Dostal (Craig); daughter, Joy O'Sullivan (Jim); son, Mark (Susan Green); son, Matt (Lynnette Tjelmeland); grandchildren, Erin, Jill, Todd, Jenny, Dan, Derek and Emma; and 10 great-grandchildren.
