LARRY NORTHLAND Shellsburg Larry Northland, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at his rural home following an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with Pastor Jesse Henkle officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery near Shellsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday. A memorial fund has been established. Larry was born Nov. 13, 1941, in Cedar Rapids, to Harlan and Alice "Evelyn" (Huntley) Northland. He graduated from Center Point High School in 1960. He married Linda Achenbach on Feb. 28, 1964; they were later divorced. On June 2, 1978, he was united in marriage to Barbara "Barb" Folkers at Oak Grove Church near Shellsburg. He was employed at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids for 41 1/2 years before his retirement. Larry was currently farming and raising cattle on his rural Shellsburg and Center Point farms. In his leisure, he enjoyed live music and dancing with his wife, Barb, at local bars and ballrooms. Larry taught himself to play the steel guitar and various other string instruments. Larry is survived by his wife, Barb, of rural Shellsburg; his children, Sue (Scott) Hobson of Cedar Rapids, Scott (Glenda) Northland of Marion and Kimberly (Caleb) Thacker of Brandon; his grandchildren, Becca Hobson, Senior Airman Mitchell Hobson, Melanie Northland and Jaina Jo Thacker; his great-grandchildren, Adrian and Noah; his brothers, Von (Diane) Northland of Seattle, Wash., and Cliff (Jeanie) Northland of Washburn; his aunt, Pearl Northland of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
