Larry Jons, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Central City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Living Center West, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at St. John Lutheran Church, located at 316 Vine St., in Center Point, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, at the church, with the Rev. Thomas Van Hemert officiating. Committal services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.
Larry was born on Dec. 8, 1939, to Frederick and Gladys (Heiserman) Jons in Cedar Rapids. Larry attended Alburnett Community School and graduated in 1958. He then went on to attend Kirkwood Community College, where he graduated in 1969 with an Associate's degree in electrical engineering. Larry married Donna Herman on April 6, 1968, in Center Point, at St. John Lutheran Church. They lived in Hiawatha, Iowa, until 1978, when they moved to the family farm near Alburnett. Larry farmed from 1958 in the Alburnett area until he retired in 2011. He also worked at Rockwell Collins for 30 years. Upon retirement from Rockwell Collins, Larry became involved with the Linn County Corn & Soybean Growers Association and later served on the Iowa Corn Promotion Board for nine years. Larry was also a part of the Linn County Farm Bureau, National Corn Growers Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, and was Commissioner for Linn County Soil & Water Conservation District. He was a long-time member of Saint John Lutheran Church in Center Point where he sang in the choir. Larry will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Larry is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Donna; son, Randy (Jane) Jons of Norman, Okla.; daughter, Mary (Jeff) Deloy of Central City, Iowa; six grandchildren, Shane Jons, Candy (Andy) Gordan, Parker (Kellianne) Jons, Payton Jons, Crystal Wheeler (Chet Cornwell) and Donna Deloy (Caleb Weeldreyer); eight great-grandchildren, Dakota, Alexis, Landyn, Maya, Makyah, Wyatt, Waylon and Brecken; sister, Lois (Richard) Brooks of Atlanta, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
His was preceded in death by his parents; one son at infancy, Lanny Rae; and brother, Lyle Jons.
Memorials in Larry’s memory can be directed to St. John Lutheran Church in Center Point.
