Larry Lee Harris of Lamont was a devoted and loving husband, father, dad, grandpa, uncle, brother, neighbor and friend. He died peacefully surrounded by family and close friends on Aug. 9, 2016.
He was born May 19, 1943, the son of Earl and Wanda (Brown) Harris. He graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids in 1961. He worked at FMC/ Link Belt for 22 years. He and his wife, Diane, owned and operated Harris Tap in Lamont for 17 years. He worked for Hayward Baker in Broomfield, Colo., for 13 years before retiring in 2009. He also served as Lamont Fire Chief and was active in the Lamont Community and Saddle Clubs.
In his early years Larry enjoyed horse shows, trail riding and hunting. He also enjoyed golfing, playing cards, shooting pool and happy hour with family and friends.
Larry worked hard and devoted his life to his wife, family and close friends. He was a very generous, honest, candid, kind, humorous and unselfish person who always put others before him.
Larry enjoyed having his house, pool and deck filled with storytelling, laughter and socializing with a cold Miller Lite. Larry had been a positive influence and mentor to everyone who crossed his path.
He is survived by his wife, Diane (Wessels), of 49 years; his children: Terri (David) Beavers, Converse, Texas; Cheryl (Beaner) Harris, Lamont; DeAnna Harris-Miller, Independence; Joe Harris (Rachel), Dacono, Colo; and Justin (Jackie) Harris, Marion. great-grandchildren: Evan, Dawson, Bella, Raelynn, Merrick and Ella. Larry also is survived by four brothers and sisters: Darrell (Jan) Harris, Don (Betty) Harris, Loretta (Tony) Svoboda and Charlotte (Dave) Powell. Larry also is survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a special sister-in-law, Deb Kremer.
Larry often shared words of wisdom and "Larry-isms" to include, "It doesn't matter what you did…. what you are going to do about it, is what matters most" and countless others not suitable for print. He will be greatly missed by all.
