Larry Dean Doherty, 78, of Alburnett, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2025. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be held at Mount Clark Cemetery in Central City, Iowa.
Larry was born on July 16, 1946, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to John “Jack” and Genevieve (Stater) Doherty. A proud Vietnam War veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970. His dedication to service continued at home, where he was a valued member of the American Legion in Marion.
He started Larry’s Auto repair from his garage. Eventually he purchased a shop on Fifth Avenue in Marion, Iowa that he ran for over 35 years until his retirement.
On August 13, 1994, he married Jamie Lynn Haeussler, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Larry had a deep passion for cars and loved racing anything with wheels, from motorcycles to cars. A devoted fan, he attended the Knoxville Nationals every year. When he wasn’t racing, you could often find him playing cribbage with friends, casting a fishing line, or grilling up dinner for family and friends. More than anything, Larry enjoyed being a dad; he’d bring his daughter to work with him every Saturday and never missed a school event.
Survivors include his spouse, Jamie Doherty; daughter, Olivia Doherty; Shane Jacobs; and sister Lynda Pollock.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jerry Doherty.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be in the care of Jamie and Olivia Doherty.
