Lahr, Mary Gertrude
Mary Gertrude Lahr, 91, of Iowa City, died peacefully Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Branch. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 22, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Rev. Michael T. Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Mercy Hospital Foundation, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or to Iowa City Hospice.
Mary was born on March 30, 1922, near Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Lintz) Eagle. She attended Holy Trinity Catholic School at Richmond, Iowa, and the Irish's Business College in Iowa City. She married Richard A. Lahr on June 6, 1946 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa. Mary was a loving homemaker and worked part-time in retail. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the National Catholic Order of Foresters and the Catholic Daughters of America.
Upon retirement, Mary enjoyed traveling with her husband in their RV, especially to Arizona for the winter months. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, baking and reading. Mary was a strong encouragement to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her religious life and as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mary is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard; three daughters, Rosemary Timlin (Paul) of Cedar Rapids, Linda Sullivan (Jim) of Virginia Beach, Va. and Theresa Adamson (Mike) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sons, Larry Lahr (Barb) of Lakewood, Colo. and Rick Lahr (Diane) of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Vera Eagle, Viola (Mike) Ryan, Loretta (Joe) Donohue and Lavina (Dan) Masson; her brothers, Herman (Leona) Eagle and Clem (Katherine) Eagle; and one infant great-granddaughter.
