Kurt Smith
Kurt Smith
Cedar Rapids
Kurt Allen Smith passed away unexpectedly on January 31, 2025, in Huntington Beach Hospital (Huntington Beach, CA) after not feeling well for 5 days. Kurt was born in California to Duane and Marilyn Smith. Kurt has always enjoyed the outdoors and especially the water. Living in Orange County, California provided him the opportunity to engage in swimming and surfing. He excelled in both sports. Kurt’s family relocated to Chatham, Illinois for several years where he and his sister, Kim, completed their high school education. They both made many life-long friends and memories. After high school, Kurt enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 2 years in Germany where he enjoyed learning about the field of mechanics and working on the army vehicles and equipment. Upon completing his 2-year service, Kurt returned to California to join his family in Huntington Beach. Kurt worked primarily in medical insurance claims/auditing while surfing, boating, and jet-skiing in his free time.
Kurt enjoyed the family visits to Iowa and seeing his grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Spending time on his aunt and uncle’s farm with his cousins was a very fond memory for him as well as spending time with the rest of his Iowa family.
Later in life, Kurt was very passionate about trading and enjoyed doing that from home. He also continued to swim, bike, and hike up to the very last weeks of his life.
Kurt was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and a cousin.
He is survived by his Sister Kim, Nephew Cody, Uncle Lyle, Aunt Joyce as well as several cousins in Iowa, Alabama, and Texas.
Per Kurt’s wishes he will be cremated, and a private burial service will take place as he is laid to rest by his sister and nephew at the Riverside National Cemetery.
