Kuntz, Marie Regina
Marie Regina Kuntz, 93, a lifelong resident of the Mount Vernon area, died, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, following a sudden illness at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, with Father John Gossman presiding. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. vigil.
Marie Regina Zinkula was born Sept. 7, 1918, to George and Bessie (Vislisel) Zinkula of rural Mount Vernon. Marie met Dean Kuntz at a dance, an activity they both loved. Even in her 90s, a good melody would always set her feet in motion. Dean and Marie married on April 5, 1945. They had two daughters and three sons.
Marie began country school when she was 4 years of age, in order to keep the school open. She was a 1935 graduate of Mount Vernon High School. Marie was a homemaker and particularly loved flowers and gardening. She also helped with the family farm operation.
Marie was a member of St. John's Catholic Church. She enjoyed card club at the church, and was a member of Greenfield Industrial Club for many years.
She is survived by four children: Jean (Robert) Bowman of DeWitt, Irene (John) Cherveny of Northfield, Ill., Roy (Barbara) of Firestone, Colo., and Glen (Jennifer) of Lisbon; and daughter-in-law, Joy Kuntz of Martelle. Also surviving are grandchildren, David (Donna) Lambertsen, Erik (Laura) Lambertsen, John (Mary) Cherveny, Kristin (Geoff) Huber, Linsey Cherveny, Griffin Kuntz, Carson Kuntz, Nolan Kuntz, Kacey (Andy) Schmit, Kyle (Taryn) Kuntz and Kaiden Kuntz; as well as five great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Raymond (Sheryl) Zinkula of Cedar Rapids and Bob (Mary) Zinkula of Mount Vernon; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; a son, Ivan; as well as her parents; her brother, Joe Zinkula; her sister, Dorothy Robinson; and an infant sister.
Memorials may be directed to either the church, Camp Courageous and or to St. Peter and Paul Historical Society.
