Kucera, Carma J.
Carma J. Kucera, 73, of Fairfax, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at her home in Fairfax.
Carma was born June 8, 1940, in Independence, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence R. and Lola J. (Preston) Nabholz. She graduated from Independence High School with the class of 1958. Following graduation she moved to Chicago and worked for various law firms there and in the outlying area from 1965-1972. She stopped working from 1972-1980 to be a full-time mom to Chris. During those years they lived in Illinois, Wisconsin, California, then back to Cedar Rapids, where she worked as a legal secretary with Elderkin and Pirnie Law Firm, having worked there from 1981-2006. She officially retired in 2006.
In her retirement she volunteered for Mercy Medical Center and did clerical work for some non-profit agencies in Cedar Rapids.
In addition to cooking and going to the gym every day with her friends, Carma very much enjoyed the many friendships she had with past co-workers and volunteers; playing bridge with her bridge club, or joining them for a margarita every once in a while.
Carma was intensely proud of her son, Chris. She loved him so very much.
She is survived by a son, Chris (Stacey) Kucera of LaGrange, Ill.; a brother, Steve Nabholz of Winthrop; and a sister, Melody Hope of Deforest, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Lewis Nabholz.
Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Inurnment: Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from noon until services Monday at the funeral home.
