Konkowski, George August
George August Konkowski, 77, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Mount Vernon, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. George's funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. The visitation will be Friday, July 12, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Choices, Mount Vernon. Burial: St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon.
Surviving George are his wife, Marilyn of Cedar Rapids; three children, Kathleen (Bob) DuChene of Anoka, Minn., Paul Konkowski (Kim Raim) of Mount Vernon and Marie (Pat) Cullen of Oak Grove, Minn.; five grandchildren, Mary Beth, Ethan, Andrew, Sarah and Jeana; and two sisters:, Barbara Burns and Diane Meyer, both of Illinois.
Preceding George in death were his parents.
George was born Dec. 4, 1935, in Chicago, to George and Isabelle Van Guertruy Konkowski. He graduated from Lane Tech High School and attended a technical college, both in Chicago. He moved to Cedar Rapids in 1968 and purchased the F.J. Meyer Construction Co. in 1972 in Mount Vernon. He married Marilyn Furmanski in Chicago in 1956.
George was an active chapter member of the Associated Pilots of Iowa. He loved his work and shared his knowledge with his son and grandson.
In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial scholarship fund has been established for his grandchildren at Hills Bank and Trust, Mount Vernon.
