Kohl, Carol
Carol Kohl, 95, of Tipton, passed away Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home, Tipton. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at the First United Methodist Church of Tipton, with visitation one hour before the service. There will be a luncheon at the church following the service at the cemetery. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery. Fry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Carol was born Sept. 19, 1915, to Rutherford Blaine Howe and Catherine Myrtle Horn near Rochester, Iowa, one of 11 children. She attended country school before she graduated from Tipton High School in 1934. On July 24, 1937, she married William Davis Kohl in Crown Point, Ind. Bill died in 1985. Carol worked in Chicago at Marshall Field's and Firemen's Fund before moving back to Tipton. Later she worked at Donahue Insurance as an agent/secretary for many years. Her husband Bill, along with their son Bill Kohl Jr., owned and operated Kohl and Kohl Construction. Carol was known for her Saturday homemade bread and Sunday night chocolate cake. Their home became the hub to many family gatherings. The yard was always full of kids. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW and Naomi Circle.
Survivors include four children, Bill Kohl (Carolyn) of Tipton, Barbara Anderson of Iowa City, Beverly Ehresman (Jim) of Tipton, and Shirley Ryan (Mike) of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two infant sons, Ronald and Raymond; her parents; four brothers, Vernon Howe, Clarence Howe, Marlin Howe and Earl Howe; and six sisters, Delight Sterner, Mabel Elsome, Marion Behrens, Mildred Swider, Catherine Phelps and Martha Howe.
Carol will be missed by the many lives she touched.
A memorial has been established in Carol's name.
