Knoke, Henry W. 'Hank'
Henry W. “Hank” Knoke, 98, of Iowa City, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville. Hank chose to be cremated. A celebration of his life is being planned for a later date.
The family requests no flowers. Hank's preference would be that in lieu of offering a memorial, do something kind for a friend or family member.
Hank was born Nov. 8, 1912, on the Knoke farmstead in Knoke, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Minnie (Leege) Knoke. Graduating from Pomeroy High School, Hank served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945 in Pearl Harbor aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia as a deep sea diver and welder.
He married Mildred Fuhrmeister in 1952, in Keokuk, Iowa. The couple later divorced.
Hank worked as a machinist, working on projects such as the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Iowa City
High School in Iowa City. He also worked for the Boeing Corporation. Hank retired in 1973.
Survivors include his son, Rick Knoke of North Liberty; stepchildren, Allen Scheetz of Pennsylvania and Karen Collins of Davenport; his former spouse, Mildred of Coralville; and many stepgrandchildren.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters.
