Knight, Fred Garland
Fred Garland Knight, 98, died May 7, 2011, in the Good Samaritan Home in West Union. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Name Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, with visitation from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union. Burial services will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Garland married Julia “Mary” Roach on Sept. 14, 1937, and enjoyed a blessed and happy marriage for over 66 years. Together they raised 10 children: Jane (Don) Marshall of West Union, Janet (Paul) Sieverding of Lynnhaven, Florida, Jeanette (Dale) Buenzow of Marion, Judy (Crayton) Ash of Elgin, Janice Underdahl of Solon, Jim (Connie) of Eagan, Minn., Jerry (Mary) of Solon, Joanne Frey of West Union, Joe (Judy) of Mount Vernon, and Julie (Dennis) Eckhoff of Humboldt. Garland and Mary had 36 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Garland was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents; a daughter, Janet; a son, Jerry; three sons-in-law; a daughter-in-law; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Paul, Robert and John.
He is survived by eight of their 10 children; a son-in-law, Paul (Janet) Sieverding; a daughter-in-law, Mary (Jerry) Knight; and one sister, Bessie (Jay) Jost of Livermore, Calif.
Memorial contributions will be principally directed to alleviate the burdens of the struggle against cancer.
