Klima, Dr. James Emil
Dr. James Emil Klima, loving husband, father and grandfather, entered into eternal life on Oct. 3, 2009, by the mercy and grace of our Heavenly God and Father. He was 77 years young. Visitation is Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Longwood Chapel of Collison Family Funeral Home in Longwood, Fla. Funeral Service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Acacia Cemetery, St. Paul, Minn. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Collison Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Longwood, Fla.
James began his life here on Sept. 17, 1932, in Cedar Rapids. He resided in Cedar Rapids throughout his childhood. James was accepted into the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota in 1950 and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1956. Jim married his college sweetheart, Charlene Hudgins Klima, on June 22, 1957. Upon completion of college, he entered the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Junior Grade and served proudly with distinction for nearly 30 years. James served at many different duty stations around the country and overseas, with the two most notable locations being Naval Training Centers Great Lakes, Ill., and Orlando, Fla. Jim was highly regarded by all his co-workers and fondly called “Captain Recruit.” Among his many accomplishments was recognition for designing the first Mobile Dental Unit while at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. James was also the reviewing officer for a recruit graduation in which over 40 companies passed in review. He attained the distinguished rank of Captain and completed his tour of duty at the Naval Training Center, Orlando, serving as the Director of Clinical Services.
Upon retirement, Jim pursued his passion for serving his Lord and Savior in the Lutheran Church, ELCA. As one of his greatest joys, his life actively revolved around his family. He was truly a blessing to them all. He is survived by his loving and adoring wife of 52 years, Charlene H. Klima. Jim also leaves five children to cherish his memory, Karen, Laurie, Gregory, Scott and Jay. In addition, he genuinely touched the lives of their spouses and was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren.
James touched the lives of numerous people with his gentle warmth, welcoming kindness and giving spirit. He gave so much of himself to help others in need and will be deeply missed by all who loved him so dearly.
