Klawitter, William R.
CEDAR RAPIDS - William R. Klawitter, 65, died from esophageal cancer on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010, at home surrounded by his family. Memorial services: 3 p.m. Sunday at First and Cedar Christian Church, 840 Third Ave. SE, by the Rev. Fred Darbonne.
Bill was born in Elkhart, Ind., to Richard and Rachelle Klawitter. After serving in the Army in Germany (1967–1969) he traveled extensively in Europe. A graduate of Manchester College and Indiana University, Bill had a lengthy career in computer programming and software development. He was employed at the University of Iowa.
Bill is survived by his wife, Joyce Henning; his son, Dan; daughter, Amber (Beau) Nelson, and grandson, Wesley; a sister, Kris (Tim) Sieracki of Indiana; brother, Karl (Victoria) Klawitter of New York; his beloved nieces and nephews; and in-laws.
Bill enjoyed a great cup of coffee, a good cigar, a challenging game of chess, working out at the gym, computers, and reading the New York Times. He was a man of strong faith and studied the Bible extensively. Bill was a true scholar, a lifelong learner, and dedicated to human freedom.
Bill served as a deacon at Cedar and First Christian and most recently supported the new church start project there.
